Program of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
Starting in 1928, the program of mathematics and applied mathematics is underpinned by one of the first national basic science research and talent training bases. In 2019, it was selected into the first batch of national first-class undergraduate program.
Students in this program are expected to become researchers in mathematics with innovative thinking and ability, international vision and global competitiveness; professionals supporting government bodies and industries to cope with mathematical problems; or industry leaders in relevant fields.
Faculties of this program are making major breakthroughs in the frontier domains. Since 2020, they have enhanced international influence by publishing 6 academic papers in the top four journals of mathematics. The program has cultivated many outstanding graduates, among which Sun Binyong elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Na, the graduate of Class 2007, served the Gordon McKay professor of Harvard University, and Du Xiumin, the graduate of Cass 2011, was an invited speaker for International Congress of Mathematicians.
- In 2010, the Qiushi (Truth Seeking) Mathematical Science Program was established, supported by the Ministry of Education under its “Experimental Program for Training Top-notch Students in Basic Disciplines”.
- In 2020, this program was selected into the “2.0 Training Base of Top-notch Student in Basic Disciplines” certified by the Ministry of Education.
- In 2020, the Mathematical Science Progression Program was established. It is supported by the Ministry of Education under its “Pilot Reform of Enrollment for Basic Disciplines Initiative”.
Program of Statistics
The Statistics program was established and started to enroll students in 1984. It developed rapidly in recent years. Since 2021, risk management and actuarial science, data science and applied statistics have become the three pathways under the program.
The main courses include probability theory, mathematical statistics, stochastic process, regression analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, time series analysis, sampling survey, financial risk management, data science, statistical software, etc.
The booming of Statistics at Zhejiang University would not have been possible without the excellent faculty of important influences at home and abroad. The statistics suggest that among the graduates in the past three years, 43.75% of them went abroad or to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan for further studies, and 30.47% studied in the mainland China.
Program of Information and Computing Science
This program features a long history and a strong faculty. It began to enroll students in 1977. With continuous efforts, it was selected into the national first-class undergraduate programs in 2020.
The program is aligned to hot topics of scientific research and major national needs, and combines mathematics and computer science to solve practical problems of great significance. The main research contents include the mathematical theories, mathematical models in computing, design analysis and software realization of high-precision and high-efficiency structure-preserving algorithms. Students are required to build a solid theoretical foundation, profound mathematical accomplishment, a strong sense of innovation, and the ability to solve practical problems. Graduates can pursue advanced education in applied disciplines, or become professionals in science and engineering calculation, inverse problems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.
The program is well reputed and influential at home and abroad. More than half of graduates chose to pursue advanced study overseas or in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan. As the society and scientific research are in need of more talents with disciplinary background in mathematics and computers, many graduates have served as tenured professors, general managers and other key positions in world-class universities, banks, Fortune 500 companies, etc.
Featured Programs
Mathematical Science Progression Program
The Mathematical Science Progression Program, under Program of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics started to enroll students in 2020. 20 students would be enrolled each year and supervised with rolling management.
Training objectives: focusing on key areas such as high-end chips and software, intelligent technology, new materials, advanced manufacturing, and national security. By leveraging advantages of the discipline, this program cultivates innovative talents and leaders with solid mathematical foundations, excellent comprehensive qualities, global competitiveness, and aspiration of devoting themselves to scientific research that meets the national needs in fundamental theory of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, inverse problems and images, the basis of probability statistics for big data, cryptography, system control and optimization, etc.
In collaboration with Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Zhejiang Applied Mathematics Center, Center for Data Science, College of Computer Science and Technology, College of Control Science and Engineering, etc., this program aims to enhance students’ interdisciplinary background, innovative spirit and practical ability.
Fast-track bachelor-doctor training scheme: Students consolidate mathematical study in the first three years and are allowed more freedom to choose elective courses. They would take postgraduate courses in the fourth year and be admitted to doctoral programs without taking the unified examination.
Qiushi Mathematical Science Program
The Qiushi (Truth Seeking) Mathematical Science Program was built in 2010. It intends to cultivate academic gurus in pure mathematics and applied mathematics with high morality, solid foundation, sound mental health, passion for mathematics, outstanding mathematical ability, broad international vision and comprehensive qualities. It is hoped that the graduates would compete for the Fields Medal in 20 years.
This program enrolls no more than 20 students each year. Rolling management is implemented, complemented by tutorial system, scientific research training, etc.
The statistics suggest that 100% of the graduates chose to pursue advanced study, among which 85% went abroad or in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. 30% of them studied in Top 20 universities (by comprehensive ranking) or Top 5 universities (by subject ranking).
Sino-French Advanced Mathematical Science Program
In 2019, the Sino-French Advanced Mathematical Science Program was established. This joint-training program collaborates French universities such as Ecole Polytechnique and MINES ParisTech. Only students already attending the Qiushi Mathematical Science Program and the Mathematical Science Progression Program can be nominated for this program. Roughly 10 students would be admitted each year. It is hoped that the graduates from the program would compete for the Fields Medal in 20 years.
This program implements “3+3+x” or “3+2+x” joint training model covering undergraduate and postgraduate study (x: students could choose to pursue doctorate degrees). Upon completing undergraduate study, students would be granted the bachelor’s degree of Zhejiang University and the certificate of Chu Kochen Honors Academy. Upon the completion of “3+3” or “3+2” study, student would be awarded the Diplôme d’ingénieur from the French counterpart.
